Our hotel is near North Carolina Central University, just south of Duke University in Durham. Also known as Central, NCCU is a historically black university within the University of North Carolina system. The school was originally opened as a private institution in 1910, becoming a public institution in 1923 as the country’s first publicly-funded liberal arts college for black students. With its long history, the campus is filled with beautiful historic buildings, located within a national historic district.
Consistently ranked as one of the top HBCUs in the country, the school covers all areas of the humanities, liberal arts, and social sciences. It also includes biomedical and bio-manufacturing research institutes, in keeping with Durham’s international reputation as the City of Medicine. NCCU is also home to a Jazz Research Institute within the department of music.
No matter what time of year you’re visiting, the campus has a number of attractions to visit and see. If you’re visiting in the spring, the school hosts an annual jazz festival (in conjunction with their research institute). Explore the NCCU Art Museum, which has a leading collection of works by African-American artists. The school also hosts the Lyceum Series, a regular lecture and performance series at the university.
